Schull, West Cork, Ireland To Photo Contents
Schull, West Cork - For the last ten years we have visited this delightful area of West Cork situated on the Mizen Peninsular. The fishing village of Schull (about 60 miles west of Cork) is renowned for it's scenery and hostelries. Particular favourites are Hacketts Bar, An Tigin, The Courtyard, and Newmans. We have enjoyed many a good night in these establishments! Beyond Schull there are magnificent sandy beaches excellent for the children at Ballyrisode, Galley Cove, White Strand and Barley Cove. The nearby village of Crookhaven is worth a visit with O'Sullivans Bar situated on the harbour. There is plenty of interest for the railway historian, Schull being the one time terminus of the Schull and Skibberreen Railway (really a road-side tramway) which closed in 1947. The viaduct at Ballydehob still remains together with several other features including station buildings at Ballydehob and Schull together with many earthworks. Accommodation is plentiful either in Self Catering or Bed and Breakfasts. Cycling - During recent visits we have found a few excellent cycle routes, a local one progressing from the village centre on the road towards Durrus and Bantry which reaches an elevated location at the side of Mount Gabriel. After passing the summit there is a minor road on the left passing around the back of the mountain and thence through various minor roads to reach Dunmannus and the north coast road around the Mizen Peninsula [some map reading required!]. The north coast road is particularly spectacular in places and best seen from a bicycle. The road eventually turns the corner and descends to meet the salt water lagoon at Barley Cove. From here Mizen Head and Crookhaven can be visited. Return on the main road to Schull via Goleen. The other suggested route is a circuit of the Sheeps Head starting from just outside Bantry and returning to Durrus [see photos later on] On last enquiry there was a cycle repair shop in Skibberreen [near the bridge] Fishing trips
